Bras for a Cause: Mosaic Chandelier Bra Supports Breast Cancer Resource Center

Have you ever seen a high fashion undergarment covered in antique crystals and hand cut, hand crafted glass tile?! Well now is your chance. Not only can you see this beautiful creation, but you also have the opportunity to bid on this Chandelier Bra after it is shown on the runway at this year’s Art Bra Austin to benefit the Breast Cancer Resource Center.

Here is a look at some of the highlights from last year’s Art Bra Austin:

Susan Ribnick is a volunteer, turned cancer survivor, turned mosaic artist in Austin Texas. A long time supporter of Art Bra Austin, this year her life experiences led her to partner with fellow breast cancer survivors, and artists, Dianne and Monica to create a shining fashion statement covered in glass tile mosaics from Oceanside Glasstile and antique crystals from Crystal Renaissance Fine Lighting! When we heard the idea, we were thrilled that our tile could be used for such a unique and positive purpose.

Susan’s story of volunteerism, cancer, triumph and creating her own Art Bra

Until last year, Art Bra Austin was something that I saw behind the scenes. My good friends, Dianne Sonnenberg, who is a professional mosaic artist, and Monica Meadows (both breast cancer survivors) have been making top notch art bras since 2010. Their collection of annual Art Bras is called the “Treasured Chest Series” and this year ours is “Treasured Chest VII – Lighting the Way” (nickname “Bijou”). It’s a big honor to work with them.

I attended Art Bra Austin for a number of years as a guest and volunteer. However, in a bizarre twist of fate I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and then the roles got flipped on me.

A very good childhood friend, Jan Apple of Minneapolis, offered to make a bra for ME to wear in the 2016 event! That is how this story really begins as I could not say no. I was a reluctant model but the piece she created, the Peter Max halter bra shown below made it in the top 5 bras submitted for the event and so I became a Live Auction Model! Peter’s halter bra I modeled sold for $4000 on the runway and was a remarkable piece of fashion (photos below).

I am an 18 month survivor and no one can participate as a model unless they have been diagnosed with breast cancer. That is why I am so new to this and now on the inside of the event. This year my health is much better and I decided that it was my turn as a mosaic artist to produce some cool bra. I teamed up with Monica and Dianne, and collectively we created the Chandelier Bra using Oceanside Glasstile and antique crystals from Crystal Renaissance Fine Lighting in Queens. I actually went out there and did a 3 day Chandelier workshop to learn all about crystal, pinning glass prisms and all that.

Of the bras submitted for the event, 60 are chosen by a jury, and only 5-6 become Live Auction items, so it is a big honor to have been selected, especially since I designed and worked on it from beginning to end. Lots of fun!

Get Fresh in the New Year with Vibrant Green Hues Inspired by Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year

Burgeoning holiday cheer climaxes with anticipation of a new year, a fresh start and a renewed enthusiasm for life. No color is more appropriate to highlight this sentiment of aspirational growth like the snapping fresh color of natural green. It buds, it moves, it blossoms into nourishing food, protective shade, and living beauty. In 2017 we look forward to possibility and the benefits that abound from nurturing that which grows. To celebrate this symbolism, we highlight images that reflect the emotion featured in Pantone’s Color of the Year 2017 video for their new color Greenery.

“It’s very bold and I think it makes for a great accent color, either as a wall, an accessory, or better yet, as the name suggests, as some actual ‘greenery’. We have a large palette of colors with which to create the perfect backdrop; whether layered with additional color or as a neutral canvas that will highlight your ‘greenery’ of choice.” – Oceanside Glasstile Lead Designer, Cathy Aroz.

A Hero’s Return

Corporal Josh Lopez moving into his mortgage-free home with his family in San Marcos, Ca. Image- UT San Diego

Corporal Josh Lopez will never forget the day he nearly lost his life while serving in Afghanistan.  The young soldier was clearing a house in the middle east when he stepped on an improvised explosive device while under enemy fire. The result, a 4 minute flat line. . .  The explosion threw him 20 feet in the air leaving him with a shattered pelvis, broken back and eventual leg amputation.  About 2 weeks ago he returned to San Diego after 30 months, 40 surgeries and many hours of rehab.

During his treatment a hospital staffer mentioned the Building Homes for Heroes program to him.  He submitted his application and was eventually selected as a match for a foreclosed home in San Marcos, Ca. Chase Bank donated the home and Beach City Builders started in on the homes stunning remodel.

XS Studio by Oceanside Glasstile located in Carlsbad, Ca had developed a contact with Beach City Builders through previous jobs and was excited to jump on board when the remodel company approached them for the project.  “We knew immediately that we wanted to be a part of this incredible gesture,” states Tamara Christman, XS Studio’s Sales and Design Specialist, “our company feels very strongly about reaching out to the community, and to be able to honor a man who has made so much sacrifice for his country was the least we could do.”

A modern color palette and attention to detail turn this house into a beautiful home.

XS Studio donated most of the porcelain seen in the house including the beautiful 24 x 24 format tiles found in the downstairs and upstairs bathrooms. They also contributed to some of the decorative ceramics found in the upstairs bathroom, and a beautiful blend of glass tile for the waterline in the pool.

A little accent is used with XS Studio’s Ceramic dimensional field tile and liner, and a modern grey porcelain graces the floor.

Over 200 people showed up on Saturday November 8 to welcome the family to their new home. As Lopez shared his story about the middle-east and his incredible road to recovery, there was not a dry eye in the house. New neighbors, family and friends all celebrated as the soldier and his family received the keys to their new mortgage-free home.

“The worst best thing.” Lopez says. Corporal Lopez we couldn’t agree more. Thank you for your courage, thank you for your service, and thank you for your amazing sacrifice. We wish you and your family the very best and hope you get to enjoy a beautiful life in San Marcos, Ca.
